Week 1: Predictions? What Predictions?
Strikes!
The strikes by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA have made TV programming for the fall of the ‘23 - ‘24 broadcast season (and maybe longer!) an assortment of flotsam from outside the US, cable, streaming, repeats, and dead end shows similar to the fall of the ‘20-’21 season after the COVID outbreak.
I won’t start predicting any renewal decisions until more scripted shows with a potential future return to the broadcast networks.
No More CW Predictions
Nexstar’s CW has filled its line up with the cheapest scripted shows it can find from across the British Commonwealth. Does anyone in the US care what happens to Canadian imports Sullivan’s Crossing or The Spencer Sisters? Not enough for me to bother with them.
What of the 4 remaining CBS/WB produced shows (Walker, All American, All American: Homecoming, Superman & Lois) that will air on the CW after the strikes are resolved? If any of those shows survive another season on the CW, it’ll only be because the studios made them cheap enough for the CW to take them again, just like they did this season. There’s no way I can predict if that will happen, and I won’t bother to try.
Fourth Season Renewals
Guaranteed forth season renewals are indefinitely on hiatus since the combination of COVID disruptions 3 years ago and this summer’s strikes have prevented any shows from reaching the 66 episodes after 3 seasons threshold that would’ve guaranteed a fourth season renewal for an in house production.
The Fourth Season Guarantee of The Renewal Gods (indefinitely on hiatus)
All shows produced by a network’s own studio in the past fourteen seasons that finished their third seasons with at least 66 episodes have been renewed for a fourth season.
And “likely” renewals for other third season shows, regardless of episode count or production studio, not covered by the guarantee, caused enough misses last season (Big Sky, Call Me Kat, Young Rock) that I’m no longer going to overweight their renewal chances when they finally do air.
Renanceled* Shows
SWAT, Magnum, PI and La Brea were renewed for a final season and will end in the ‘23-’24 season. Edit: Young Sheldon was renanceled on 11/14/23. Blue Bloods was renanceled on 11/20/23. Bob Hearts Abishola was renanceled on 11/29/23. Station 19 was renanceled on 12/8/23.
Shows Already Renewed for '24-'25
Fox’s Bob’s Burgers, The Simpsons, Family Guy and Krapopolis were renewed for multiple seasons prior to this season, and will continue into the 2024-25 season at a minimum.
